One reason to make the effort, believe it or not, is to prevent pain. Instead of reaching for that piece of leftover chocolate cake in the fridge, move your hand to the left and grab the red grapes! Some of these healthy foods pack as much pain-fighting power as ibuprofen. Cheers to a new and holistic approach to pain management!

Here are some foods that may be worth including into your diet:

Red Grapes--This popular fruit contains resveratrol, a powerful compound that blocks the enzymes that contribute to tissue degeneration. The evidence: In lab experiments at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, resveratrol protected against the kind of cartilage damage that causes back pain.

Ginger--Almost two-thirds of patients with chronic knee pain reported less soreness upon standing after taking a ginger extract, according to a six-week study from the University of Miami.

Soy-- An Oklahoma State University study found that consuming 40 grams of soy protein daily for three months slashed patients' use of pain medication for osteoarthritis in half.

Cherries--High amounts of antioxidants called anthocyanins are the key to cherries' pain-fighting power. In a U.S. Department of Agriculture study, participants who ate 45 Bing cherries a day for 28 days reduced their inflammation levels significantly.

Coffee/ Caffeine- University of Georgia researchers showed that moderate doses of caffeine (equivalent to two cups of joe) reduced post-workout pain by almost 50 percent.

Fish—Eating fish 2-3 times per week can help tame the pain or inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis, migraines, and some autoimmune diseases, including Crohn's disease.

To learn more about these highly beneficial foods visit: http://www.aarp.org/food/diet-nutrition/info-03-2011/pain-fighting-foods

Easy Living News:

Recently, we had a photo contest on our Facebook Fan Page. Talk to your doctor about these practices, as every individual is unique.

• Consume a low-fat diet.
• Eat cold-water fish 2 to 3 times per week.
• Reduce your intake of linoleic acid found in margarine, butter, & dairy
• Eat plenty of darkly colored fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins
• Maintain a normal blood pressure.
• Stay mentally and socially active throughout your life.

For more information regarding Alzheimer ’s Disease visit-- http://www.umm.edu/ency/article/000760all.htm

Lifestyle Management Solutions

We are pleased to announce a new service offering, "Lifestyle Management Solutions" available this coming summer.

Now, with the assistance of Easy Living Services and its partner network, clients can take advantage of services designed to save time and reduce stress.

Let’s Talk…Having the Conversation about Senior Driving

Discussing a senior’s continuing ability to drive safely is right up there with religion and politics as topics to avoid at dinner time. On the one side, seniors value independence and driving is the ultimate get away that represents freedom. On the other hand, traffic fatalities involving older drivers are startling and families are right to be concerned. "On the basis of estimated annual travel, the fatality rate for drivers 85 and over is nine times as high as the rate for drivers 25 through 69 years old."

A Harvard publication summarizes that it's not hard to figure out why driving becomes more dangerous with age. The passing years often bring physical limitations, such as waning vision, poor hearing, trouble craning your neck to get a good look over your shoulder, or difficulty moving your foot swiftly from accelerator to brake. Cognitive changes such as slightly slower reaction times or increased difficulty in juggling all the sensory input at a busy intersection can also affect your driving. Neurological problems caused by Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and, in some cases, diabetes can impair driving skills even more seriously.

Will discussing a senior’s driving make a difference? One study shows that of the older adults surveyed who reported that someone had talked to them about their driving, more than half said they listened to and followed the suggestions of others. Here are some pointers for initiating the difficult conversation:

Speak in a confidential environment

Be sure the speaker is someone the elder trusts

Create a united front with the family

Consider the personalities involved and who has been most successful in the past at handling difficult topics with the elder

Try to avoid issuing an ultimatum

Consider persons other than spouses and adult children to deliver the message

In the same survey mentioned above, 10% of older respondents said they would choose a close friend to initiate the driving conversation. If your elder has a police officer friend, this person might have considerable credibility.

Key things to get started are first to observe the older driver, be sure to have a recent health exam to rule out any preventable barriers to sight, hearing, or reaction time, and investigate transportation alternatives so that there are some answers along with any necessary new constraints.

Lastly, as you support your elder through a difficult transition, remember that the message may need to be repeated. Each time, share genuine safety concerns and genuine caring, and your message will get through.

Find additional resources on the topic of older driver safety at www.aarp.org.

Content Source: aarp.com

Sensational Seniors Photo Contest

Click the here to visit our Facebook page to enter!

CPR--A Lifesaving Action

When a person has a sudden heart attack, their survival greatly depends on immediate help. Getting CPR from someone nearby is essential. Unfortunately, less than 1/3 of those people who experience a heart attack at home, work or in a public location get that help. Most bystanders are worried that they might do something wrong or make things worse. That’s why the American Heart Association has simplified things. They have created a multimedia campaign called “The Hands Only CPR”.

The Hands Only CPR Campaign

The American Heart Association is joining with the Ad Council for this national multimedia PSA campaign in an effort to increase awareness of and confidence in giving Hands-Only CPR.The goal of the campaign is to introduce Hands-Only CPR, a simplified method of CPR that requires NO mouth-to-mouth breathing, and to educate and encourage bystanders to take action when they see an adult suddenly collapse.

The Steps are Simple…

1. Call 911

2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives

The campaign’s tagline is “hands can do incredible things but nothing compares to using them to help save a life.” To watch Hands-Only CRP in action Check out this video .

Promote Brain Power & Memory

Did you know that you can be proactive in promoting brain power and memory? Yes…it’s true! Promptly recognizing the signs and symptoms of stroke can save a loved one’s life and result in the best possible prognosis.

St. Joseph’s Hospital of Atlanta uses “GIVEME5” as a tool in educating patients and the community at large on the five key symptoms of stroke:

WALK—Is a person’s balance off?

TALK—Is a person’s speech slurred or face droopy?

REACH—Is one side weak or numb?

SEE—Is a person’s vision all or partly lost?

FEEL—Is a person’s headache severe?

These warning signs are clues your body sends that your brain is not receiving enough oxygen. If you see one or more of these signs, suspect a stroke and call 911.

St. Joseph’s also recommends the use of the acronym F.A.S.T. to assist people in recognizing stroke.

Face—Watch for a drooping face.

Arm—The person may have arm weakness or numbness.

Speech—The person may have slurred speech, or difficulty speaking or understanding words.

Time—Call 911 immediately.

Happiness in Older Americans

Yes, growing old means more wrinkles, age spots and forgetfulness. But getting older is not all bad for many people. Mounting evidence suggests aging may be a key to happiness. There is conflicting research on the subject, however, and experts say it may all boil down to this: Attitude is everything.

Older adults tend to be more optimistic and to have a more positive outlook on life than their younger, stressed, counterparts, research is finding. The results take on more meaning in light of the ongoing increase in life expectancy.

Why are seniors happier?

A recent study by a team of researchers, published this month in the journal Cortex, suggests one reason: Older adults remember the past through a rosy lens.

The researchers recorded brain activity using MRI scans while young and older adults viewed a series of photos with positive and negative themes, such as a victorious skier and a wounded soldier.

Results showed in the older adult brain, there were strong connections between emotion-processing regions of the brain and those known to be important for successful formation of memories, particularly when processing positive information. The same strong connections weren't found for the younger participants.

The researchers, writing in a 2006 issue of the journal Psychology and Aging — think that as a person's life expectancy decreases, they might focus on what makes them feel good now rather than focusing on the negative. Aging can bring more cheer as people become more comfortable with themselves and their role in society.

In the end, it’s all about attitude. Individuals that adapt the best to changes have the highest expected levels of happiness, according to the Population Reference Bureau.

Source: excerpt from 4/10/10 livescience.com

How to Get Up from a Fall

After you fall, panic is often your first reaction. However, how you react after a fall can cause more injuries than the fall itself. If you try to get up too quickly or in the wrong position, you may make an injury worse. Always remember these three words in case of a fall…prepare, rise, and sit.

Prepare: Look around for a sturdy piece of furniture, or the bottom of a staircase. Do not try and stand on your own. Roll over onto your side by turning your head in the direction you are trying to roll, then move your shoulders, arm, hips, and finally your leg over.

Rise: When you are ready to rise, push your body up. Lift your head up and pause for a few moments to steady yourself. Slowly get up on your hands and knees and craw to a sturdy chair. Lastly, place your hands on the seat of the chair and slide one foot forward so it is flat on the floor.

Sit: Keep the other leg bent with the knee on the floor. From this kneeling position, slowly rise and turn your body to sit in the chair. Sit for a few minutes before you try and do anything else.

Talk to your primary care provider about having a fall-risk evaluation. The fact that you have fallen once means you have a high risk of falling again.

Seniors: Comfortable In Their Own Home

Did you know the fastest growing age demographic in the United States is age 65 and older? The cause of many types of arthritis remains unknown, but common features of the arthritic disorder include pain, joint stiffness, and restrictive mobility of joints, which are associated with damage to cartilage and joints and ongoing inflammation. By understanding ways to ease the symptoms of arthritis, you can actually prevent further damage and maintain a healthy lifestyle even after arthritis has set in.

Having a balanced diet is the key to health in general, but certain foods have been proven to help soothe symptoms of arthritis, according to Arthritis Today Magazine.

* Incorporate fish, kiwifruit, flaxseed and a variety of nuts into your diet to reap the anti-inflammatory benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids.

* Whole-grains, fish, nuts and legumes all are great sources of selenium, a mineral with anti-oxidant properties.

* Eggs, whole milk and fish are all great sources of Vitamin D which may prevent the development and/or progression of rheumatoid arthritis.

*Although many are fearful that exercising with arthritis can cause pain and discomfort, the truth is quite contrary. Exercise builds strength, which minimizes the effects of the arthritis.

* Yoga not only encourages weight loss, decreasing the amount of weight put on joints, but also promoting relaxation building strength.

* Walking reduces stiffness and helps get joints moving.

* Water aerobics provides a low-impact workout, saving joints from fatigue while strengthening the muscles around them.

Consult your physician before beginning any holistic treatment, as herbs, exercise and foods affect each person’s body differently.

Source: ezinearticles.com

Summer Travel Tips for Seniors with Parkinson's

Summer Travel Tips for Seniors with Parkinson’s Disease

Many people feel that Parkinson’s disease limits their ability to enjoy travel.
The truth is that people living with Parkinson’s disease can still travel, but a few extra planning steps are necessary in order to make traveling safe and enjoyable. Here are a few tips to consider:

* When flying, allow extra time! Depart early for the airport in order to leave plenty of time for security snags or last minute gate changes.

* Double check medication supplies and always take extra. Additionally, make certain that you have an additional refill on your meds in case you need to replace them out of town.

* Keep emergency numbers stored in multiple places. This is necessary in the event your luggage is misplaced in transit. If possible, carry a small bag with extra medication and emergency phone numbers, including your physicians.

* Plan extra time on your vacation for rest. In the excitement of the trip, it’s easy to overdo the amount of activity that is packed into one day. Schedule rest time to make sure that your body isn’t being overtaxed.

With a little planning and preparation, a vacation for your loved one with Parkinson’s is possible. A much needed vacation can inject a feeling of hope into the lives of those suffering from this chronic disease as well as their caregivers.

Source: Caregiver.com

Blood Thinners..."Do's & Don'ts"

Taking Blood Thinners? Become Informed.

Blood thinners or “anti-coagulents” are commonly used in the prevention of strokes. This is especially important for people who have suffered a first stroke, as they have an increased risk of suffering a second one. In fact, about 30% of all strokes in a given year are repeat strokes. Thus, stroke survivors must be diligent about stroke prevention. However, even if you have never suffered a stroke, but are at risk of getting one, you are likely to be taking a blood thinner. Common anti-coagulent medications include: coumadin, wafarin, aggrenox, heparin, lovenox, plavix, and aspirin.

“Do’s & Don’ts”

Do take your medication at the same time each day.

Do keep your physician’s appointments for proper medication monitoring.

If you miss your dose, take it as soon as you remember, but only if it is the same day. Never double your dose unless directed by your physician.

Consult your physician before taking generic versions of anti-coagulents.

Do keep your diet and activities similar each day.

Do notify each doctor, dentist or healthcare provider you see that you are taking a blood thinner.

Do notify your doctor before starting any new medicines or supplements.

Do watch for signs of bleeding, such as headache, dizziness, weakness, nosebleeds, cuts that do not stop bleeding, unusual bruising, bleeding gums, brown urine, or red or black stools.

Do notify your doctor if you plan to travel out of town for an extended period. Arrangements for filling your prescriptions and obtaining lab test will need to be made in advance.

Don’t stop taking your medication without consulting your doctor.

Always seek advice from your physician concerning any questions you might have regarding your condition or medication.

Source: Jose Vega M.D., Ph D, About.com

.
.

Crime Prevention Tips for Seniors

Crime Prevention for Senior Citizens

One of the best ways to take an active part in crime prevention is to become more alert and aware of what’s going on around you. Each person should adopt a more observant and active attitude on a daily basis. As a result, you become more aware of strange cars, persons or circumstances which might be dangerous and require calling the police.

Don’t be a victim of purse snatching.
Purse snatching is a common crime, but not widely publicized. Any woman is a target for this offense, even though elderly women are particularly vulnerable.

You can minimize your chances of becoming a victim of purse snatching by following these simple rules:
Do NOT carry a shoulder bag over your shoulder. This makes it easier for a suspect to grab the bag, knock you down and cause bodily harm.

Carry a small clutch-type handbag underneath your arm. This will prevent bodily injury in the event of a purse snatch.

Do NOT carry large sums of money, valuable jewelry or all of your credit cards in the purse.

Carry only what you plan to use for the day. This includes one check instead of the whole checkbook or one credit card.

Do NOT walk with your purse dangling from your side.

Do NOT leave your purse in shopping carts or on counters.

The most frequent areas for purse snatching are bus stops, grocery stores, and shopping center parking lots. The harder you make it, the less likely you are to become a victim of crime.

Source: City of Roswell, Safety Information & Tips

Spring Allergy Tips

Spring Allergy Tips

It won’t be long now…spring allergy season is right around the corner!

Tips for Managing Spring Allergies:

Try to stay indoors whenever the pollen count is very high (pollen counts usually peak in the mornings).

Keep your doors and windows closed whenever possible during the spring months to keep allergens out. An air purifier may also help.

Clean the air filters in your home often. Also, clean bookshelves, vents, and other places where pollen can collect.

Wash your hair after going outside, because pollen can collect there.

Vacuum twice a week. Wear a mask because vacuuming can kick up pollen, mold, and dust that were trapped in your carpet.

Common over the counter medications like antihistamines, decongestants, nasal decongestant sprays and nasal saline sprays are often effective in treating seasonal allergy symptoms. Always consult with your doctor or pharmacist when choosing an over the counter medication.

If over the counter treatments don’t work your physician may recommend prescription medications or allergy shots.

Some allergy sufferers turn to natural therapies for relief, although the research is mixed on their effectiveness:

* Butterbur. The herb butterbur (Petasites hybridus), which comes from a European shrub, shows potential for relieving seasonal allergy symptoms. In one Swiss study, butterbur was just as effective as the antihistamine Allegra for reducing allergy symptoms.

* Quercetin. This flavonoid, which is found naturally in onions, apples, and black tea, has anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown in research to block histamines.

* Stinging nettle. The roots and leaves of the stinging nettle plant (Urtica dioica) have been used to treat everything from joint pain to prostate problems. Although some people use freeze-dried stinging nettle leaves to treat allergy symptoms, there isn’t much research to show that it works.

* Nasal irrigation. Nasal irrigation with a combination of warm water, about a quarter-teaspoon of salt, and a quarter-teaspoon of baking soda may help clear out mucus and open sinus passages. A Lifesaving action.

When an adult has a sudden cardiac arrest, his or her survival depends on immediately getting CPR from someone nearby. Unfortunately, Unfortunately, less than 1/3 of those people who experience a cardiac arrest at home, work or in a public location get that help. Most bystanders are worried that they might do something wrong or make things worse. That’s why the AHA has simplified things.

Don’t be afraid. Your actions can only help.

It’s not normal to see an adult suddenly collapse, but if you do, call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest. Don’t be afraid. Your actions can only help. Increasing the number of people who know about Hands-OnlyTM CPR will increase the chance that someone can help when an adult suddenly collapses, and more lives can be saved.

Hands-OnlyTM CPR works.

Hands-OnlyTM CPR, performed by a bystander has been shown to be as effective as “conventional” CPR in emergencies that occur at home, work or in public. There are only two steps to remember:

* 1) Call 911
* 2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest.

You can be a lifesaver. If you ARE CONFIDENT in your ability to provide CPR that includes breaths with high-quality chest compressions with minimal interruptions, then provide either the conventional CPR that you learned OR Hands-OnlyTM CPR. If you ARE NOT CONFIDENT in your ability to provide CPR that includes breaths with high-quality chest compressions with minimal interruptions, then provide Hands-OnlyTM CPR. In both cases, continue Hands-OnlyTM CPR until an AED arrives and is ready for use or EMS providers take over care of the victim. Learning conventional CPR is still recommended. The American Heart Association recommends conventional CPR with breaths and compressions for infants and children; victims of drowning, drug overdose or other respiratory problems; and adult victims who are found already unconscious and not breathing normally. A CPR course teaches you the skills needed to help those other victims. You’ll also practice performing the same two steps you’ll need for Hands-OnlyTM CPR. Typically people who have had CPR training are more confident about their skills and more likely to assist someone in a real emergency.

Contact Easy Living Services, Inc. to enroll in a CPR course today! 770-442-8664

Hands-OnlyTM CPR scientific statement:
The American Heart Association works with some of the world’s leading resuscitation scientists and medical professionals. Their continuous review of published research studies on CPR resulted in the following AHA Science Advisory, published in an April 2008 edition of the medical journal Circulation: Hands-OnlyTM (Compression-Only) Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: A Call to Action for Bystander Response to Adults Who Experience Out-of-Hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
Source: American Heart Association

Easy Herb Gardening

Easy Herb Gardening

Just about everyone can grow and enjoy fresh herbs right at home. Try a small container garden first before advancing to a backyard garden. In fact, container gardening is great for herbs because you can keep containers close to or in the kitchen so you will use them more, they contain the herbs so you don’t end up with a garden full of mint, and they provide a lovely decoration for your back porch, sun room or kitchen window.

Choosing Containers:
Choices abound in container options for your herb garden. You can plant each herb in a separate terra cotta pot or plant a collection in a long window box. Your only limitation when it comes to choosing pots for herbs is that you need to use containers that are food safe. Some glossy or brightly colored pots are made with lead or other materials you don’t want in your food. Plastic pots are always safe, and most plain terra cotta is safe. Containers that are not safe for food will usually have a warning label, so it should be easy to find something decorative that will not be harmful to your family.

Seeds or plants?
Most people like the instant gratification of plants in the garden, particularly when it comes to herbs. You can start using the herbs almost immediately if you start with plants, while you will have to wait a month or more to use herbs grown from seed. But some plants grow quickly and easily from seed, so it makes sense to have a combination of plants and seeds as the foundation of your herb garden. What should I grow?It makes sense to grow herbs that you would like to use frequently.. Start with the basics: rosemary, thyme, basil, oregano. Parsley is also very easy to grow. If you like Mexican food, add cilantro and epazote. Chives are another great, quick-growing herb you can use on potatoes, in salads or with pasta. These herbs all like a lot of sun and well-watered soil. If you notice that the herbs start wilting, move the plants out of direct sunlight for at least part of the day.

Getting Started…
When potting, be sure to plant them at the correct depth. The top of the transplant root ball should be level or slightly below the potting mix surface in the new pot. Start with a moist, but not saturated, potting soil Continue adding potting media and transplants until the pot is filled to within ¾ inch of the top edge of the pot but do not pack down the potting media as you fill the pot. Water the pot thoroughly, until water drips through the drainage holes. You’re on your way!

2010 Census Fraud Prevention

2010 Census Fraud Prevention

The 2010 US Census has started and cyber-criminals and scam artists are beginning to use the event to gain personal & financial information from older adults to empty bank accounts and steal identities.

How can you protect yourself?

Census forms will be mailed in February/March and will require a response by April 1, 2010. During the period of April to July 2010, Census field representatives will visit every household that DOES NOT mail back a completed 2010 Census form. If a Census form has already been completed by someone in your household, then NO ONE should come to your home claiming to be from the Census.

Field Representatives must present official ID badges that contains a Dept of Commerce watermark and expiration date. They should be carrying a bag with the Census Bureau logo. They should also be able to provide supervisor contact information and a letter from the Census Bureau Director on official letterhead.

The 2010 Census workers will ask questions pertaining to name, gender, age, race, ethnicity, relationship and home ownership. Field reps will NOT ask questions pertaining to social security number, bank account information or credit card numbers. Employees of the US Census Department can NOT ask for money/donations, enter your home or tell you that you owe money to the government.

Any concerns regarding Census personnel should be reported immediately to the Census Bureau Call Center at 404-335-1555 or 1-888-586-9489.

Source: GADHS ---Division of Aging Services

Thank you to everyone that attended our Lunch and Learn with Dr. James Huysman on Feb 19. Recent studies find that eating dark chocolate may lower your risk of having a stroke or lessen the likelihood of dieing after a stroke. The health benefits may come from flavonoids that are thought to prevent cell damage. The findings, however, are not yet conclusive and doctors are quick to point out that too much chocolate can be harmful.

Foods that Reduce Stress Levels

Reach for these items the next time that you are feeling under pressure or under the weather. Families, and particularly daughters, assume the care of dependent elderly and chronically ill people in most cases. The study was conducted in 2009 by Ruth M Calero Perez and published in the Journal of Gerontology. The study results show that in some cases family caregiving creates inappropriate behavior in the relationship and that the negative effects on the physical, psychological and social health of the caregiver are highly related to previous life history between the caregiver and the care recipient. Social isolation and lonliness were commonly reported by the caregiver.

Source: Ruth Calero Perez, University of Granada

The Agency Caregiver Advantage

Employing a consistent, professional caregiver can go a long way in reducing family stress levels and restoring proper relationships and family dynamics.
Offering flexible and affordable caregiver services, the Easy Living team stands ready to serve your family. However, winter months can present some challenges. Being prepared for wintery weather is essential...

1. Dress warmly when going outside, even if its just a quick trip to the mailbox. Make sure to cover your head.

2. Put the cordless phone or cell phone in your pocket when going outside. In case of a fall, this can be a lifesaver.

3. Keep melting salt near the front door. Use a decorative can or container to conceal the unsightly appearance of the bag. Be sure to have something handy to use as a scoop.

4. Do NOT turn the thermostat below 65 degrees and risk hypothermia.

5. Before using the fireplace, consider having it cleaned and inspected by a professional.

6. Keep extra batteries on hand for flashlights. Keep survival items like drinking water, 3-5 days food supply and blankets organized and easily accessible.

7. Do NOT wait until the last minute to refill prescriptions. Keep at least a one week's supply on hand should the weather turn bad.

Go to www.easylivingservices.com for more information or CALL US at 770-442-8664!

Source: AssociatedContent.Com

Preparing for the Unexpected

What is the first thing that comes to mind when a major illness strikes?
Usually it is whether you have enough money for treatment. Seniors and adults with chronic health problems are among the most vulnerable. As we age, our digestive tracts slow, giving bacteria more time to cause harm. Seniors also experience diminished sense of smell and taste which can make it more difficult to notice spoiled food.

In general, hot foods should be refrigerated as soon as possible within two hours after cooking. But don't keep the food if it's been standing out for more than two hours. Don't taste test it, either. Even a small amount of contaminated food can cause illness.
Date leftovers so they can be used within a safe time. Generally, they remain safe when refrigerated for up to three days. Your leftovers will last even longer if you freeze them. Turkey does especially well. Re-heat turkey to between 140 and 165 degrees.
If in doubt, throw it out, says FDA microbiologist Kelly Bunning, Ph.D., associate senior science adviser in CFSAN: "It's not worth a foodborne illness for the small amount of food usually involved."
(Excerpted from the FDA Consumer , July 2002)

FDA's Food Information Line1-888-SAFEFOOD (1-888-723-3366)

Don't Give Up on Exercise!

Seniors & Disabled Adults---Don’t Give Up on Exercise!

Many seniors and disabled adults give up on physical exercise because of stiffer joints, decreased flexibility and other health conditions. Sometimes you just don’t know where to start. Perhaps exercising seems too boring or too difficult. However, exercise is critical for all seniors and is vital for healthy aging. The good news is that with so many forms available, there is some type of exercise that is appealing and possible for everyone.

One excellent form of physical activity for seniors and many disabled adults is aquatic exercise. Water exercise solves a number of impediments for seniors. Aquatic exercise is a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off your bones, joints and muscles. Water offers natural resistance, which helps strengthen your muscles. You can even do aquatic exercise if you don't know how to swim. Ask your physician if you might benefit from water activity.

You might start with water walking. In water that's about waist-high, walk across the pool swinging your arms like you do when walking on land. Avoid walking on your tiptoes, and keep your back straight. Tighten your abdominal muscles to avoid leaning too far forward or to the side.
To increase resistance as your hands and arms move through the water, wear hand webs. Water shoes can help you maintain traction on the bottom of the pool.
Once you're comfortable walking in waist-high water, try walking in deeper water. As you walk, swing your arms. Keep your back straight, and tighten your abdominal muscles to avoid leaning too far forward or to the side. To help you stay above the water, you might place a water noodle between your legs. Make sure the noodle is higher in back than in front. If you don't know how to swim, wear a flotation vest or float belt in deep water. To increase resistance as your hands and arms move through the water, wear hand webs. Water shoes can help you maintain traction on the bottom of the pool.
Aquatic exercise can be fun at any age, size or fitness level — whether you try it on your own or sign up for a class. Many local YMCA locations or health clubs offer inexpensive water aerobic or water movement classes that are tailored for seniors.
Jump in.

4. Tabletop trees are great gifts for seniors since many are
physically unable to put up their own holiday trees. Decorate the tree with family photos and items commemorating special events. Live, pre-decorated trees are available at garden centers and less expensive artificial trees are sold at discount stores.

5. Call local a local landscaper or lawn care professional in your loved one's area and pre-pay for a season of lawn mowing and general lawn care.

6. If your elderly loved one has a pet companion, a truly appreciated gift would be pre-paid pet exercising services.
These services are especially helpful during winter months as well as the heat of summer when walking a pet may be dangerous for senior citizens.

7. There are many very practical items that are geared toward making independent living at home easier.

Purchasing and installing home safety items like shower grips, guide rails and tub chairs can be a really welcomed gift.

Large faced electric wall clocks make a helpful gift as eye sight may diminish with age. No battery to replace and easy to see from a distance.

Flashing light doorbell and flashing light telephones can also benefit an elderly loved one who may be hearing impaired. Check on-line for sources.

Remotes with tiny numerals make watching television difficult for seniors. Eliminate the frustration with the gift of a Large Button Universal TV remote. Additionally, cell phones with larger buttons are now available for seniors....check your local cell phone store for options.

8. Arrange for in-home hair grooming or salon treatments. Check with local barbers or hair dressers for availability. You can pre-pay for the service and arrange the in-home appointment for a convenient date & time for your loved one.

Holiday Open House----Easy Living Services, Inc.

HOLIDAY DESSERT SAMPLING!

Join the staff of Easy Living Services, Inc. in celebrating the Holiday Season at our annual Open House. It’s a season of happiness and joy, surrounded by a crowd of loving friends and family, right? It’s a wonderful picture, but for many seniors feelings of lonliness and sadness dominate during the holidays.

What contributes to these feelings? Many seniors have lost spouses and close friends as they age, are separated from family and may be in poor health. Additionally, they may feel guilty for even having these feelings of sadness.

Here’s some strategies for dealing with those “holiday blues”:

* Seniors shouldn’t live in isolation, especially at the holidays. If family can’t be with them, loved ones can help coordinate visits from friends. Arrange participation in volunteer opportunities at local churches or civic groups. Helping others is a great way to forget your own troubles and to restore the joy of the season. Consider hiring a caregiver to accompany your senior to festive events if you are unable. Call Easy Living Services at 770-442-8664 to learn more about caregiving services.
* Help seniors to be extra careful with finances. Assist in establishing a gift giving budget and helping your loved one to stick with it. As most seniors live on a fixed income, overspending can cause worry over the bills after the holidays.
* Encourage the senior in your life to avoid alcohol during the holidays. Alcohol is a depressant that can intensify feelings of sadness.
* Encourage your loved one to express their sad feelings with you, a friend or a professional, if necessary. Denying or hiding these feelings can often intensify them. Additionally, post holiday “letdown” can be eased by helping to organize and store holiday decorations, gifts and photos.
* Stay healthy and get adequate rest. Senior citizens need to be reminded to pace themselves and go easy on holiday treats and sweets. Stay on a healthy eating plan and get as much rest as possible. The stress of the time seems to decrease immunity and increase the rates of colds and flu.

Log onto www.easylivingservices.com for more senior health and lifestyle tips!

Alert: Illegal H1N1 anti-viral drug sold over internet

FDA has issued a recent alert that “scammers” are capitalizing on the public’s concern over H1N1 flu by marketing illegal or fraudulent products to consumers, mostly over the internet. Some of the H1N1 drug products claim to prevent, treat and/or cure the virus.
The FDA has tested many of these products and found them either not to contain the
marketed ingredients or to contain substances that are not approved for use in the United
States. According to Dr. Margaret Hamburg, M.D., Commissioner of FDA, “products
that are offered for sale online with claims to diagnose, prevent, mitigate, treat or cure the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus must be carefully evaluated,” she adds, “Medicines purchased from web sites operating outside the law put consumers at increased risk due to a higher
potential that the products will be counterfeit, impure, contaminated, or have too little or too much of the active ingredient.”

Protecting Seniors from H1N1 Flu

H1N1 and the Elderly…Protection Advice

It seems that everyone is concerned about the spread of flu, especially as supplies of seasonal flu vaccine dwindle and H1N1 vaccines are not yet available in large quantities.
We’re all bracing for a tough flu season. However, we can reduce our anxiety level by employing some basic common sense and taking preventative measures. How can you best protect yourself and the seniors you care for?

Fortunately, H1N1 swine flu doesn't seem to be a big problem for seniors unless that person has a chronic underlying condition, according to CDC reports. Researchers theorize that older persons, who have been exposed multiple times in their life time with various flu outbreaks, may have residual immunity of which some is against the H1N1 strain. Those seniors with underlying conditions like heart and lung diseases or compromised immune systems have additional risks associated with H1N1 and the seasonal flu. Most physicians recommend that their elderly patients receive both the seasonal and H1N1 vaccines, if available as the best means of preventing flu.

Advise Seniors to follow the following guidelines:
1. Stay away from individuals exhibiting signs of flu including, sneezing, runny nose, coughing, fever. Do not touch objects previously handled by the sick person.
2. Wash hands frequently and carry hand sanitizer along on outings.
3. Use disposable paper towels instead of cloth hand towels to dry hands.
4. Avoid touching eyes, mouth and nose.
5. Stay away from large crowded areas in confined spaces.
6. If you are caring for someone ill with the flu, consider wearing a mask to protect yourself. Also, if you become ill, protect the senior you care for by arranging for a substitute caregiver.
7. If you suspect flu in an elderly loved one, prompt medical attention is recommended so that anti-viral medications can be started and risk of complications reduced.
8. The following symptoms should prompt you to seek urgent medical care for a loved one:
Problems breathing or shortness of breath
Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
Sudden dizziness
Confusion
Severe or persistent vomiting
Flu-like symptoms that improve but then return with fever and worse cough
Please post your comments and elder care tips. We’d love to hear from you!

How to keep active in the fall

I am interested in finding our what fun activities or events help to keep you moving, healthy, happy and living easy when the fall air chills and the time change makes it dark so early. Unfortunately this is not always the circumstance. Many hospitals have limited staffing and it can sometimes be a while before a staff member is available to assist or monitor your needs. More than 10% of fatal falls for seniors occur in the hospital. Medication , disorientation and Dementia are the top contributing factors to falls that occur in the hospital.

One of the best solutions for hospital safety is hiring a caregiver to assist your loved one while on the road to recovery in the hospital. A caregiver can provide not only safety but companionship which is vital to the recovery process. Caregivers are availabe for hospital assistance around the clock bridging the gap between busy or geographically distant families and their loved one.

Caregivers in the hospital are under the direction of the hospital's nursing staff. In the event of an urgent need, the caregiver is there to immediately summon the hospital staff. The caregiver can contact the family during an emergency as well as provide reports to the family on the progress and well being of their loved one.

Having caregiver assistance in the hospital not only helps to ensure safety and companionship but it also helps to reduce depression and loneliness which will speed up the road to recovery. The patient's family will have peace of mind restored knowing their loved one has one on one supervision.

If you would like more information about hiring a caregiver please email us at info@easylivingservices.com

Is Care At Home The Right Choice?

At Easy Living Services, we look at senior care differently.
